16 November: Briefing on Human Development Report 2006: Beyond scarcity: Power, poverty and the global water crisis, in the DHL Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. Speakers include H.E. Takahiro Shinyo, Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the UN; Arunabha Ghosh, HDR Office, Patricia Dandonoli, President and Chief Executive Officer, WaterAid America.

30 November: Briefing on Alliance of Civilizations Final Document Report, in the DHL Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. Invited speakers include H.E. Baki Ilkin, Permanent Representative of Turkey to the UN; and H.E. Juan Antonio Yáñez-Barnuevo, Permanent Representative of Spain to the UN.

American University - A day-long programme of panel discussions on Peacekeeping, Media Coverage of the UN and Development. Speakers: Salman Ahmed (DPKO), Jean Marie Guehenno (DPKO), Hedi Annabi (DPKO), Mark Malloch Brown (EOSG), Nada Al-Nashif (UNDP), and Daphna Shraga (UNDP) (17 Nov).

Drew University - A group of 16 undergraduate students enrolled in a UN Semester course. Group meets every Tuesday and Thursday with various UN officials and delegations. (Sept-Dec)

Book signings at UN Bookshop

Chinmaya R. Gharekhan, former Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the Middle East, and author of "The Horseshoe Table: An Inside View of the UN Security Council" will discuss and sign copies of his book (28 November 2006, 1-3 pm).


David M. Malone, Assistant Deputy Minister, Foreign Affairs, Canada will discuss and sign copies of his book "The International Struggle Over Iraq: Politics in the UN Security Council 1980-2005" (30 November 2006, 1-3 pm). USG Shashi Tharoor will make introductory remarks at both events.

19 October - 24 November (Main Gallery): "Human Security for All" - A collection of photographs from projects in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, showing the human face and the practical application of the human security concept. Sponsored by the Human Security Unit of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs;

31 October - 23 November (North East Gallery): "Afghan Children -- The Next Generation" -- An exhibition of photographs by Steve McCurry showing the face of today's Afghanistan through its children. Sponsored by Fairleigh Dickinson University;

29 November - 13 December (North East Gallery): "Con/Textualization: A Palestinian Narrative" -- An exhibition of Palestinian art in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People sponsored by the Division for Palestinian Rights and the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations.

2 - 28 November (South Gallery): "The Beauty of Deserts -- The Challenge of Desertification" -- An exhibition focussing on some of the most magnificent ecosystems of this world: the deserts, marking 2006 as the International Year of Deserts and Desertification. Sponsored by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the Government of Italy and IFAD.

MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (29 November): Solemn meeting in the Trusteeship Council Chamber at 10:00 a.m. Speakers will include the Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly and the President of the Security Council. Other activities organized in New York in connection with the observance of the Day will include a Palestinian exhibit at 6:00 p.m. at the GA Public Lobby sponsored by the Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and presented by the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations; and film screening of " The Color of Olives" in the DHL Auditorium at 1:00 p.m. (duration 2 hours).

The Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life will premiere at the United Nations on 16 November launching a campaign about the world's water crisis (6:30-7:30pm, Trusteeship Council Chamber). Speaking at the screening will be Ann Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director; Stephanie Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General; Peter Gleick, President, Pacific Institute; Congressman Earl Blumenauer; Christina Norman, President of MTV; Sway Calloway, MTV News Corespondent; Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter, President of Dew Jam Record; and Arunabha Ghosh, co-author of the 2006 HDR. During the event, HDR cards with the button "At least 20" will be distributed to the audience.

Human Rights Day (10 December): The theme of this year's Human Rights Day is Fighting Poverty: A Matter of Obligation Not of Charity. A website in all official UN languages, containing press materials for the Day and other background material will soon be launched. There is a space on the website for posting events that are being organized for the Day. ANNOUNCEMENTS

DHL: A group of delegations from Kazakhstan will visit UNHQ to participate in a series of events on 17 November 2006. From 10:30-10:50, a ceremony of the presentation of two books (including one written by the President of Kazakhstan) to the Dag Hammarskjöld Library will be held at the Woodrow Wilson Reading Room of the Library. From 11:30 a.m -1:00 p.m., there will be a panel discussion on the theme "Inter-ethnic and inter-religious accord: sharing experience of Kazakhstan" at Conference Room 6.

UN Publications: United Nations Publications will participate in the Guadalajara International Book Fair, Nov 25 November - 3 December 2006, in Guadalajara, Mexico. This book fair, organized by the Guadalajara University, is the world's largest marketplace for Spanish-language titles. United Nations Publications and its partner agencies will be available in booth 253.
