Security Council Affairs Division
The Department of Political Affairs provides continuous substantive and secretariat support to the United Nations Security Council, helping the Council to carry out its “primary responsibility” under the U.N. Charter for maintaining peace and security.
DPA’s Security Council Affairs Division:
- Advises Council members, other Member States and staff of the Secretariat regarding procedural and substantive matters;
- Prepares the procedural briefs of the President of the Council;
- Drafts key documents including the Security Council’s Annual Report to the General Assembly;
- Processes letters and reports of the Secretary-General and other documentation as Security Council documents;
- Provides support for the Council’s Sanctions Committees, Working Groups and other subsidiary bodies drafting reports and preparing analyses and assessments upon request;
- Prepares the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council.
