Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People

The General Assembly, which is the highest organ  of the United Nations, established the Committee to promote the realization of internationally recognized Palestinian rights (see sidebar). Its has 23 Members and  25 observers. The Committee monitors the situation related to the question of Palestine and reports and makes suggestions to the General Assembly or the Security Council. In recent years, the Committee has also focused on supporting the Israeli-Palestinian  peace process. More about the Committee... 

NGO Network 
Partnership with a worldwide network of over 1000 NGOs accredited to the Committee has been established. These diverse NGOs are invited to participate in the various meetings, and receive news and updates from the United Nations on the question of Palestine, as well as information on activities carried out by other NGOs worldwide. The inalienable rights of the Palestinian people as spelled out by the General Assembly:  
  • the right to self-determination without external interference;
  • the right to national independence and sovereignty;
  • the right of Palestinians to return to their homes and property from which they had been displaced and uprooted

The Committee's programme includes the convening of international meetings and conferences,  with the participation of political personalities, representatives of Governments and intergovernmental organizations, United Nations officials, academics, and the media, to which NGOs are invited.  They focus on  support for the Palestinian Rights and on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Each year, on 29 November, anniversary of the 1947 General Assembly resolution partitioning Palestine, the Committee holds special events in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People at United Nations headquarters in New York and sponsors similar activities at the United Nations offices in Geneva and Vienna, and other venues, to which NGOs are invited.

This Web page is a project of the  Division for Palestinian Rights (DPR) of the Department of Political Affairs, United Nations.  The Division  liaises with NGOs, organizes  meetings, monitors developments relevant to the question of Palestine and publishes bulletins, studies and other documentation; it also maintains an online information system on the question of Palestine (UNISPAL); and the Question of Palestine Web page .
