International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People The annual observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People takes place on 29 November, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977. Special events are organized at United Nations headquarters in New York, as well as at United Nations offices at Geneva and Vienna. |

United Nations International Conference of Civil Society in Support of the Palestinian People The theme of the International Conference was “End the Occupation!” Its purpose was to provide civil society organizations from all regions of the world with an opportunity to exchange views on the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, renew efforts to coordinate their activities and develop action-oriented proposals in support of the Palestinian people. 9-11 September 2002, United Nations Headquarters, New York
The Conference explored the role of the international community in supporting societies emerging from conflicts, focusing on those contemporary examples that have been the subject of concerted United Nations involvement. The Conference was open to representatives of NGOs associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), those in consultative status with the United Nations through the Economic and Social Council, and those working with UN agencies and programmes and with UN Information Centres and Services. 24-26 June 2002, Rabat, Morocco United Nations African Meeting in Support of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People This Meeting was held under the auspices of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. The general theme of the Meeting was “Achieving the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people – a key to peace in the Middle East”. Experts, representatives of governments and intergovernmental organizations assessed the impact of the Israeli military offensive in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, considered the challenges to a peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and discussed international efforts at salvaging peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. They also discussed African support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. The last day of the Meeting, 26 June, was devoted to the United Nations Workshop of African NGOs on the Question of Palestine. The theme of the Workshop was “Action by civil society in Africa in solidarity with the Palestinian people”. Invited speakers reviewed NGO action of the African region in pursuance of the recommendations made by the NGO Forum held in Durban in August 2001, discussed the mobilization of public opinion in support of the Palestinian people and considered action-oriented proposals by African NGOs and mechanisms for their implementation. |

16-17 April 2002, Nicosia, Cyprus This Meeting was held under the auspices of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in order to promote support for international efforts to contain the current crisis and salvage the peace process. Experts assessed the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, reviewed various initiatives aimed at resuming the peace dialogue and discussed the urgency of addressing the root causes of the conflict. 18 April 2002, Nicosia, Cyprus This NGO Meeting was held under the auspices of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in order to provide NGOs from all regions of the world with an opportunity to exchange views on the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, renew efforts to coordinate their activities and develop action-oriented proposals in support of the Palestinian people. Invited experts made presentations on various issues regarding the role of civil society on the question of Palestine. A plan of action was adopted by participants at the close of the Meeting. |
