How to Set Up Search Alerts and Journal Notifications in the UN's Electronic Databases

Introduction

The process for setting up Alerts is similar for most of the UN's subscription resources. For this tutorial, we will be using ProQuest and the Economist as examples.
Search Alerts notify you when new articles about a specified research topic are added to a database or when a new issue of a publication has come out.
Journal Notifications alert you when a new issue of a favorite journal becomes available online.
Alerts from The Economist include several popular newsletters and alerts.

Search Alerts

To set up email Search Alerts through ProQuest:

  1. Link to ProQuest through the UN Library's Electronic Resources Alpha List.
  2. Create or sign-in to your My Research account by clicking the Sign in link at the top right side of the screen. Note: If this is your first time creating an account, you will need to verify your account registration by replying to a confirmation message sent to your email inbox.
  3. Perform your advanced search, setting any specifications or search limiters that you require.
  4. Click on the Save Search link to save search terms and limiters to your account.
  5. Click on the Set Up Alert link, located below the Search box.
  6. Define your alert terms including Email Subject Field, HTML or Plain Text format, Highlighting options, Types of documents sent, Frequency of Alerts, and Stopping Point for Alerts.
  7. Click on Create Alert.

Journal Notifications

To set up email notifications whenever your favorite journals are published:

  1. Link to ProQuest through the UN Library's Electronic Resources Alpha List.
  2. Create or sign-in to your My Research account by clicking the Sign in link at the top right side of the screen.
  3. Click on the Publications link on the top left hand side of the page.
  4. Select the magazine or journal that you want.
  5. If the title is available, click on it to open the record.
  6. You will see information about the journal including the available issues. The Set Up Alert link appears at the top left of the record.

Setting Up Newsletter and Email Alerts from The Economist

To set up a Politics This Week or other email alert:

  1. Link to The Economist through the UN Library's Electronic Resources Alpha List.
  2. Click on the Register link at the top of the page to create a free account.
  3. Select The World This Week: Politics under Newsletters and Special Alerts.
  4. Click Register.
