The UNBIS Thesaurus website has been completely redesigned and is now fully functional in the six official UN languages. The UNBIS Thesaurus contains the terminology used in subject analysis of documents and other materials relevant to United Nations programmes and activities. The thesaurus terms are used in UNBISNET, the freely accessible web version of DHL’s catalogue, as well as in the United Nations Official Document System (ODS), the password-protected central repository for UN documentation.

Following an introductory seminar on UN documentation, held in Rabat in September 2001, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library has reconfigured this training material for a wider audience. At present only the French version (Atelier d'introduction à la documentation des Nations unies) is available, but other language versions are being prepared. The objective is to offer a general introduction to UN documentation, particularly to research tools, such as the indexes to the documents of the main UN organs, databases prepared by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library (UNBISnet and UN-I-QUE), the UN Internet site, as well as the UN Official Document System (ODS) and the online Treaty Collection.

On 18 September 1961, Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, died in a plane crash in Ndola, Northern Rhodesia, with 15 others. Timed to coincide with the fortieth anniversary of this tragic event, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library has launched a multimedia Web site honouring his years of service to the Organization (1953-1961). With the aim of capturing the impact and importance of Dag Hammarskjöld’s tenure as Secretary-General, the site features a year-by-year narrative of events, challenges and accomplishments, captioned photographs, historic video and audio clips, a selection of his most notable quotations, speeches and writings, biographical information and links to additional resources. Of particular interest are the texts of transcripts from the United Nations Oral History Project that concern Mr. Hammarskjöld. Among the interviews included are those conducted with Brian Urquhart, Sture Linner, Arthur Lall and Pauline Frederick. Also featured is a section devoted to his legacy, including, for example, the Dag Hammarskjöld Peacekeeping Medal, the Meditation Room, the stained glass window designed in his honour by Marc Chagall and the Dag Hammarskjöld Library.

An active hyperlink has been added to the Web Address field in the SMLCAT database. If you have Internet Explorer on your c:\ drive, the hyperlink will open the URL recorded in that field.
We created a new file that will replace the existing Smlcat.pft in your system. We retained the same name Smlcat.pft for the file so that no changes need be made in your system files. You can save the new file, by using Internet Explorer, into the directory where you have installed the SMLCAT database; it will overwrite the existing file, but just to be on the safe side it might be best to keep a copy of the original Smlcat.pft, renamed, somewhere on the c:\ drive. If you encounter any problems, please do not hesitate to contact us at: dhlsfl@un.org
