Economic
and Social Council -- Introduction |
 |
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which primarily deals
with economic, social, cultural and health matters as well as human
rights and fundamental freedoms, also has a coordinating function
for the work of the United Nations and the specialized agencies.
It consists of 54
members, 18 of which are elected each year by the General Assembly
for a three-year term.
The ECOSOC currently holds an organizational session in the spring
and a substantive session in July. The substantive session, convened
alternately in New York (even years) and Geneva (odd years), is
divided into the following parts: high-level segment, operational
activities segment, coordination segment, humanitarian affairs segment
and general segment. The Rules of Procedure of the Economic and Social Council
are contained in document E/5715/Rev.2 (Sales number 92.I.22). Background information about the work of the Council can be retrieved from the Repertory of Practice of United Nations Organs.
The basic
format for the symbols of ECOSOC documents is: E/[year]/[sequential
number], e.g., E/2010/100. From 1946 to 1977, the format was E/[sequential
number], e.g., E/6014.
