Millennium Development Goal 8
Goal 8

Develop a global partnership for development.

Target: In cooperation with developing countries, develop and implement strategies for decent and productive work for youth.

Target: In cooperation with pharmaceutical companies, provide access to affordable essential drugs in developing countries.

Target: In cooperation with the private sector, make available the benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications.

Developments:

The United Nations Millennium Declaration represents a global social compact: developing countries will do more to ensure their own development, and developed countries will support them through aid, debt relief and better
opportunities for trade.

Progress in each of these areas has already begun to yield results. But developed countries have fallen short of targets they have set for themselves.

To achieve the Millennium Development Goals, increased aid and debt relief must be accompanied by further opening of trade, accelerated transfer of technology and improved employment opportunities for the growing ranks of young people in the developing world.

Millennium Development Report 2005

By resolution 58/211, the General Assembly designated 2006 as the International Year of Deserts and Desertification. The Assembly is deeply concerned by the exacerbation of desertification, particularly in Africa, and its far-reaching implications for the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, in particular on the goal on poverty eradication.

2006 marks the end of the First United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty which was proclaimed by the General Assembly by resolution 50/107 of 20 December 1995.
