The Security Council marked the 11th anniversary of resolution 1325 (2000) on women and peace and security in October 2011 with an open debate on the theme of “Women’s Participation and Role in Conflict Resolution and Mediation.” The need to strengthen implementation of resolution 1325 and follow-on Security Council resolution 1889 (2009) was highlighted at the debate and will be a major focus of efforts in this area next year, with a new UN system in place to track progress though an agreed set of 26 indicators.
Key dates: 30 September: Third anniversary of Security Council resolution 1888 on women and peace and security (addressing sexual violence in conflict) Late October: 12th anniversary of Security Council resolution 1325 on women and peace and security and submission of the strategic framework for implementation of the resolution
