This year marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations. To commemorate this occasion, the United Nations cordially requested all its depositary libraries to hold an exhibition preferably on or around the United Nations Day, 24 October 2005.

To assist depository libraries in organizing the exhibition, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library prepared and sent a boxful of materials as well as a tube containing numerous posters. These materials and posters are related to twelve major areas of UN activities which are summarized in the “UN Milestones” poster included in the tube. It was suggested that the “UN Milestones” be the centerpiece of the exhibition. All depository libraries were invited to add to their exhibition any other UN-related issues in which their region/country may be interested.

The box also included a newly published “To speak for the world: speeches and statements by Dag Hammarskjöld Secretary-General of the United Nations 1953-1961”, a gift from Ambassador Kaj Falkman of Sweden, who compiled the book.

Also included was a mini-CD which shows Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, speaking about the Global Compact initiative that brings companies together with the UN agencies and civil society to support universal environmental and social principles (for playing, the CD-ROM face up should be inserted face up). The UN Works, via its website and TV programmes, introduces real stories of how the United Nations works.

The active participation of all depository libraries in this world-wide exhibition is strongly encouraged as it will help publicize the existence of the UN collection and UN research expertise in these libraries. In addition to 400 depository libraries in 145 countries, the UN Information Centres in 66 countries, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library at UN Headquarters, and all the libraries of the Regional Commissions and United Nations Offices are participating. All libraries participating in this event are invited to send photographs of their exhibition for posting on the Depository Libraries’ website.

Preparations for the Exhibit in a box project.
Dag Hammarskjöld Library volunteers helped in the Exhibition in a Box project. Posters had to be organized and rolled into a tube. Boxes had to be constructed and filled with pamphlets and books. Boxes and tubes were then shipped to 400 depository libraries and 66 UNICs.
