The Depository Library System is an important part of outreach efforts of the United Nations. As such, the United Nations strongly encourages all depositories to organize events and activities on a regular basis to publicize their United Nations collections to a wider audience. Click above to see recent events organized by depository libraries.Please share your events with us by sending photographs, programmes, summaries, etc., of your event to
the Coordinator, Depository Libraries.

While the United Nations cannot support events financially, it may be possible to provide promotional materials to an organizing library if informed far in advance.

Examples of events undertaken by depositories

This year the International Organizations Documents Center of the Russian State Library has started a Jubilee project ”Turning UN history pages” devoted to the 70-th anniversary of the UN Organization.

The project consists of the whole cycle of exhibitions which will last from January till December. Eight exhibitions will show the decades of the most striking moments of formation and activities of the UN in the world. The final exhibition will take place together with the annual traditional roundtable “The UN Day – 2015: Strong UN. Better World”. As usual the roundtable will be organized jointly with our partners – UN Information Center in Moscow and representatives of the UN Organization in the Russian Federation.

All year round readers and guests of the library will have a unique chance to learn more about one of the leading international organizations, which is spreading vital information, and addresses to everybody in the world.

The exhibition is based on a very rich UN depository fund of the library which counts more than 400 000 items. It includes rare and recent UN documents and publications revealing UN many-sided activities in all spheres of humanity.

The documents about the first decade (1941-1950) are already on the Center’s display. It includes such materials as the Inter –Allied Declaration signed in London on June 12, 1941, and the UN Charter ratified on October 24, 1945.

Everyone can also have a look at documents about the opening of the first General Assembly, January 10, 1946, and the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, December 10, 1948, as well as many other interesting documents, photos and facts

The National library of Algeria in Algiers organized a celebration to mark 25th anniversary of the adoption ofthe Convention on the Rights of the Child by the the United Nations General Assembly.

The event included the participation of many associations such as CIDDEF, NADA, ANIT, UNICEF, the Association of solidarity with women and children, also present at that event were the Ministery of solidarity and the embassadrice for children Mrs Souakri, along with the representant of UNICEF in Algeria and other personalities.

On the 22nd of October a thematic roundtable was held in the Russian State Library. The UN Day celebrated annually in the RSL Center of international organizations documents was organized jointly with the UN Information center in Moscow. The roundtable was a great opportunity to pay attention to the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals and to the Sustainable Development Goals in the near future.

Opening the event Alexandre Samarin, RSL Deputy General Director, welcomed the participants, and expressed deep gratitude to Alexandre Gorelik, who was Director of the Information Center in Moscow for 15 years. Alexandre Gorelik is a long-time partner of the Russian State Library. A. Samarin handed a commemorative gift to A. Gorelik from the RSL management and thanked him for fruitful cooperation, support and contribution to the development of the Russian State Library, the biggest UN depository library in Russia.

The theme of the roundtable was: "What is there for 2015? The UN proposes a new agenda for mankind." The roundtable participants and experts came to the RSL international organizations documents centre to discuss the Sustainable Development Goals.

Many students from different Moscow universities attended the event. They asked a number of questions on the topic, and there was a discussion about future goals of mankind.

As part of the UN Day celebration, the Kerala University Library Community organized an exhibition of United Nations and World Bank Publications.

The Deputy Librarian-in-charge Smt. L. Saraswathy inaugurated the exhibition on 24th October 2014.

The collection includes not only documents but also colourful posters, which depict various activities of UN & World Bank. From the beginning to the end, different categories of users like students, research scholars, faculty members and general public visited and put their valuable suggestions.

September was generous for new documents and publications acquisition to the United Nations depository collection of the Russian State Library. Visiting the 27th Moscow International Book Fair at the Exhibition Centre has already been an annual traditional event for UN depository librarians. Librarians of the UN depository collection had the opportunity to get acquainted with the UN new publications especially of those organizations, information and knowledge of which are in great demand. These are documents of such organizations as Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), International Labour Organization (ILO), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat), United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO ).

UN agencies provided librarians an opportunity to carry out the selection of relevant sources of information. As a result, the United Nations Collection in the Russian State Library added 46 new documents and publications.

Mr. Fernando Servana, Head of the department of library and publishing on the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), attended the Moscow International Book Fair and presented new FAO publications. He kindly agreed to visit the main library of the country, which acquired the status of a FAO depository library just last year. FAO documents and publications became the most requested among our readers because this information reflects the world pressing problems. The distinguished guest visited the exhibition «FAO documents and publications in the Russian State Library”. All FAO documents are available for users in the public domain in the International organizations documents center.

Roundtable “Water and Energy” dedicated to the World Water Day took place on the 20-th of March, 2014 in the Russian State Library’s Center of international organizations documents.

The event was organized jointly with the UN Information Center in Moscow. World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, is a great opportunity to pay attention to the state of the world water resources and problems of the global water pollution.

Alexander Samarin, RSL Deputy General Director, and Alexander Gorelik, Director of the UN Information Centre in Moscow welcomed the participants.

The theme was continued by Alexander Shekhovtsov, Deputy Director of ANO “Center of International Projects”. His life and profession are closely connected with Lake Baikal, the national heritage of Russia and the whole world. Without doubt he knows all about the lake. The scientist noted that the main focus today should be given to the territories which feed Baikal. The UN staff together with Mongolia and Russia are working together to monitor the situation with Lake. Roundtable participants were shown a wonderful movie "Baikal without borders ", created with support of a number of ministries and UN organizations. Rasim Khaziakhmetov, Board Member of LLC “Rushidro” focused on the desire to preserve nature in its original form. There is a forecast that in the middle of the XXI century 40 % of people of the world will experience lack of water. In 2010 hydropower and environment specialists worked out a document to solve this problem. At the end of his speech Rasim Khaziakhmetov presented a wonderful encyclopedia “World’s rivers and lakes".

Arthur Alibekov, Head of the Working Group on hydropower UNDP/ GEF - Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, Oksana Nikitina, Project Coordinator for the conservation of freshwater ecosystems and sustainable hydropower World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Tatiana Kaigorodova, Director of the UN Documentation Center of the World Health Organization (WHO), told the audience about the activities of the above-mentioned organizations. They noted that only by joint efforts water resources can be stored in the proper form and used by the whole world.

A lot of students from different Moscow universities attended the event. They asked a number of questions on the topic, and there was a discussion about tragic events at the Sayano -Shushenskaya HPP, the fate of the pulp mill and toxic waste on the shores of Lake Baikal.

Librarians of the Center of international organizations documents prepared a thematic exhibition on the basis of the UN depository fund.

Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) publications, devoted to the assessment of transboundary rivers, lakes and groundwater, as well as UNESCO studies on the role of water in human development, UNDP publication "Baikal chest " and " Energy and sustainable development", dedicated to the conservation of freshwater ecosystems and sustainable hydropower in our country were very popular.

Colorful encyclopedia "World’s rivers and lakes" also attracted the attention of the student audience. Besides, they had an opportunity to get this edition as a gift.

Se utilizarón las distintas fuentes de información y bases de datos de la ONU (SAD, UNBISNET, ...) y la base de datos de ONUBIB (http://onubib.uv.es)

La Biblioteca depositaria de la ONU en la UV (ONUBIB) ha recibido la visita de la Consellera de Bienestar Social de la Generalitat Valenciana, Asunción Sánchez Zaplana de la Generalitat Valenciana. Esta biblioteca es una de las cinco bibliotecas que hay en España a través de las cuales se difunden los fondos que se reciben de las Naciones Unidas y de otros organismos internacionales relacionados con la ONU.

En su visita, la consellera ha estado acompañada por el delegado del Rector para la Cooperación Internacional, Guillermo Palao, la coordinadora del Comité español de ACNUR en la Comunidad Valenciana, Arancha García, el coordinador del Observatori del Refugi (OdR), Albert Millet, y la responsable de la Biblioteca Depositaria del Fondo de Naciones Unidas, M.Consuelo Pons, la directora la la biblioteca de Ciencias Sociales, Blanca Llopis, el vive decano de Facultad de Derecho, Javier Palao, la directora general de cooperación de la GVA, Herminia Palomar, entre otros.

The Russian State Library organized a “Winter laboratory” on the eve of the forthcoming New Year. The Library was open to everybody on December 21, 22. A lot of Muscovites and tourists had an opportunity to visit the main library of Russia.

The librarians whose everyday activity is connected with the UN depository collection did everything possible to popularize and disseminate UN information and knowledge. They organized:

Meetings with guests to promote the United Nations activity and invite all present to take part in the events and visit exhibitions.

Thematic and new acquisition exhibitions to show and cover the trends of the UN System activity. The visitors were shown the documents on human rights displayed at the exhibition “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.

Special actions for the UN information resources popularization to disseminate the UN information resources which are available due to cooperation and partnership with representatives of UN Offices in the Russian Federation as well as the UN Information Center in Moscow. CDs on human rights were the most requested ones.

The first “Winter laboratory” in the Russian State Library had a very positive impact by presenting and opening up information resources of the Russian State Library, including its rich UN depository collection. It is expected that the users of the UN documents will come to the Center again to get to know more about the UN functions, its structure, goals and role worldwide.

In total, the event was attended by 118 visitors.

Kerala University Library (DL-246) organized an exhibition of the United Nations and World Bank Publications in the Library for a span of two weeks starting from 24th October to 7th November 2013 in connection with UN Day.

The Exhibition was formally inaugurated by Smt. Saraswathy. L, Deputy Librarian-in-charge, Kerala University Library on 24th October 2013 in the UN & WB Section in the Library.

The exhibition received much media coverage, publicity and enthusiastic involvement of our reading community. The Student Community, Research Scholars and Faculty Members access the documents.

On the 23-rd of October, 2013 a traditional roundtable dedicated to the UN-birthday celebration took place in the Russian State Library’s Center of international organizations documents. The celebration was organized for readers, university students of Moscow region and representatives of civil society. The theme suggested for discussion “20 years: fighting for human rights” arranged for fifty participants.

The roundtable was organized jointly with the UN Information Center and the Office of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and dedicated to the World Conference on Human Rights, Vienna, Austria, 14 - 25 June 1993. The Conference consecrated the principles of independence and indivisibility of all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural, a characterization that has become commonly accepted today.

The librarians prepared the exhibition “20 years: fighting for human rights”. Thanks to our partners all the exhibited documents were in Russian. Copies of the disk with documents on human rights and other publications on human rights were distributed among the present.
The subject of human rights is of great interest not only in Russia but in the world community. That’s why UN human rights documents are very popular in the readers’ auditorium of the Russian State Library. Ms. Hulan Tsedev, Chief of the Europe and Central Asia Section, OHCHR Headquarters, Mr. Viatcheslav Bakhmin, a prominent human rights advocate and Moscow Helsinki Group’s current member were the key-note speakers at the event..

A roundtable, organized by the UN Information Center in the Russian Federation and dedicated to discussing the topic of “Millennium Development Goals (MDG) – context, thought, perspectives?” took place in the Russian State Library’s Center of international organizations documents on the 22-nd of August, 2013.

The discussion was opened by Alexander Gorelik, Director of the UN Information Center in the Russian Federation.

Sergei Bobylev, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor of the Moscow State University and others scientists presented their views and everyone said much more needs to be done to reduce inequalities of the world’s countries.

An exhibition on “Millennium Development Goals: hope and reality” was also organized along the same MDG theme. Ms S. Martynyuk, Head of the Center, underlined that the Russian State Library is and will remain one of the most intellectual centers in the country. The Center opens access to UN information and knowledge, which positively impacts the pursuit and achievement of the MDGs goals in the Russian Federation.

Dag Hammarskjöld Library (DL-230), Uppsala, Sweden

27-30 September 2012: The depository library of Uppsala University library, Sweden – The Dag Hammarskjöld and law library – took part at the Book and Library Fair in Gothenburg, Sweden (see picture attached). The UN-library had a stand along with the UNA Sweden and the Swedish organizations of UNICEF, UNDP and UN Women - all gathered under the UN flag. The theme this year was the 8 MDGs. The fair is open to the public and the visitors to the stand varied from young high school students to senior researchers as well as the interested public among whom some even had encountered Dag Hammarskjöld in person.
8 September 2012: The depository library of Uppsala University library, Sweden – The Dag Hammarskjöld and law library – took part in the Cultural Night arranged by the city of Uppsala. The library had an exhibit on the 8 MDGs including literature and information material. There was also an exhibit of UN stamps and the film Uppsala’s Dag Hammarskjöld was shown. The University of Valencia (DL-248) organized a special day of celebration for the United Nations day on October 24, 2012.

This popular event was attended by local digniataries: Ms. Carmen Martinez, Mayor of Quart de Poblet; Mr. Santiago Cabanas, General Director for Foreign, Multilaterals, Global and Security Affairs, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also in attendance were Mr. J. Christer Elfverson, Special Advisor to the UNWTO Secretary-General and Mr Michel Bergeron.

Many thanks go to the UN Depository Librarian, Ms M. Consuelo Pons Pons who is a very active member of the United Nations Depository Library system.

Kyushu UN Depository Library (DL-228), Fukuoka, Japan
(June- July 2012)
The Kyushu UN Depository Library organized several programmes and activities:

- Briefing librarians on the United Nations collections: this briefing was centered around the subjects of depository system categories, publication formats & classification. It was conducted at the Conference Room of the Fukuoka City Public Library. In total, it was attended by 55 participants.

- Publicity Activities and Book Exhibits: to promote the United Nations Rio +20 international conference, Kyushu UN Depository Library organized several events and published written accounts on their newsletter (KUNDL News No.68 May June 2012, 750 copies) and distributed to patrons ,students, researchers; Rio +20 was also promoted onthe the library's homepage. Additionally a book exhibit with the same theme was displayed at the library.
