The First Committee (Disarmament and International Security Committee) is one of the six Main Committees of the UN General Assembly, dealing exclusively with disarmament and international security related issues. The First Committee consists of all Member States and holds its substantive session annually from October to late-November. According to its mandate, the First Committee examines international disarmament and security questions and recommends draft resolutions to the General Assembly for adoption. It deals with a broad range of issues, both nuclear and non-nuclear, such as nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, other weapons of mass destruction (biological and chemical weapons), nuclear-weapon-free zones, conventional weapons, regional disarmament measures, small arms proliferation, military budgets, the prevention of an arms race in outer space, disarmament and development, transparency in armaments and illicit arms trafficking. |
