Outside the UN

In terms of 'independent learning' which is an integral part of studying a foreign language, participants in the Russian Language Programme are encouraged to practice their language skills and to enhance their cultural awareness by taking advantage of the wide range of cultural activities that New York city offers. Among them:
  • attending concerts of classic and modern music, drama shows, ballet and opera, performed by the famous Russian actors, musicians, symphony orchestras touring in New York at:
    • Tribeca Performing Arts Center
    • Avery Fisher Hall -- Lincoln Center
    • Brooklyn College -- Whitman Hall
    • Millenium Theater Center
    • other places*
  • visiting exhibitions of Russian art at:
    • the Museum of Modern Art
    • Metropolitan Museum
    • numerous galleries in Greenwich Village and West Chelsea*
  • watching Russian TV*
  • listening to the Russian radio stations*
  • reading Russian papers and magazines (sold all over the city)*

At the United Nations

Participants in the Russian Language Programme are highly recommended to join the United Nations Russian Book Club (www.intranet.un.org/russian) where members of the Club may borrow books, VHS tapes and DVDs with Russian movies and music. The Russian Book Club is also famous for organizing art exhibitions, parties and other interesting cultural events which are highly appreciated by the Russian Language participants as well as by other staff members and Missions' personnel.
