STAFF
IN THE GENERAL SERVICE, SECURITY OR TRADES AND CRAFTS CATEGORY, OR IN
THE FIELD SERVICE CATEGORY UP TO AND INCLUDING LEVEL 5:
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
- Staff members who demonstrate
proficiency in any of two official United Nations languages.
* Staff members whose mother
tongue is an official language of the Organization must pass the prescribed
examination in another official language, which may be the language
in which proficiency is required for their job, in which case language
proficiency language may be waived;
* Staff members whose mother
tongue is not an official language must pass the examination in a
language other than that in which proficiency is required for their
job.
AMOUNT OF ALLOWANCE
- First language: 5% of G-5
Step 1 salary at each duty station
- Second language: 50% of
First Language Allowance
* Allowance
payable up to two languages.
OTHER CONDITIONS
- Proficiency tests shall
be held not less than once each year;
- Staff members in receipt
of a language allowance may be required to undergo further tests at
intervals of not less than five years in order to demonstrate their
continued proficiency in the use of two or more official languages.

IN THE PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY:

their salary increment every 10 months instead of normal 12 months.
