UNITED NATIONS IRAN-IRAQ MILITARY OBSERVER GROUP


LOCATION: Iran and Iraq

HEADQUARTERS: Tehran and Baghdad

DURATION: August 1988 - February 1991

STRENGTH: 400 military personnel, supported by international and locally recruited civilian staff

FATALITIES: 1 (military personnel)

EXPENDITURES: $177,895,000 net

FUNCTION: Established to verify, confirm and supervise the cease-fire and the withdrawal of all forces to the internationally recognized boundaries, pending a comprehensive settlement. UNIIMOG was terminated after Iran and Iraq had withdrawn fully their forces to the internationally recognized boundaries. Small civilian offices were established in Tehran and Baghdad to implement the remaining tasks which were essentially political. By the end of 1992, those offices were phased out
